From Theatre to Architecture – Transforming Light into Art

What’s a Gobo?

A gobo is a patterned template crafted from durable materials like metal or heat-resistant glass. Placed within a gobo holder in a focusing lantern, it transforms ordinary spaces by projecting captivating images onto surfaces. Think of it as a film slide, but specially designed to withstand the intense heat of gobo projectors.

Initially designed for the world of theatre and television, gobos have evolved to become a staple in entertainment, corporate events, architectural marvels, and retail settings.

Goboland takes gobo craftsmanship to the next level with our revolutionary Black Steel gobos. Etched onto specially coated 0.2mm hard-rolled stainless steel or heat-resistant glass, our gobos boast incredible detail and durability. The unique black coating minimizes image flare, ensuring sharper focus for an unparalleled visual experience.

The Origin of The Term 'GOBO'

Some say it's a condensed form of 'go-between,' symbolizing its placement between the lamp and lens of a projecting lantern. Alternatively, it's suggested to stand for 'Graphic Optical Black Out,' a nod to its shadow-creating capabilities in early TV lighting. In the U.S.A., they were even known as 'Flags.' And who knew? Gobo is not just a lighting marvel but also the lead character from Fraggle Rock and a vegetable root also known as Burdock.
